Olympic Diving Preview: Women Advance To 3-Meter Springboard Semifinals
Women’s three-meter, the first of the individual diving events will
move forward today, as the semifinals are scheduled for 3:00pm ET.
heading into the semifinals, Jennifer Abel of Canada has a very small lead on China’s He Zi, who is sitting in second above her teammate Shi Tigngmao.
Abel is an Olympic veteran, making her debut when she was only 16 in Beijing. In London, she came in sixth in individual springboard and took home a bronze with her synchro partner Emilie Heymans.
He holds two olympic medals under her belt. Both from 2012, she won synchronized springboard with her partner Wu Minxia, and came in second on 3m.
Both American women, Abby Johnston and Kassidy Cook have advanced to semis. They are standing in sixth and eighth place, well within the top 18. Only the top eight will advance to finals though, so they will need to dive well enough today to either move up, or stay exactly where they are.
Going into semi finals there are only 50 points separating the top nine divers, so no one is headed into semis with a huge advantage. With two rounds of diving to come, a lot can change between now and the final standings.
